Backed by a group of college buddies, he recorded a demo of original material in Bristol, Virginia, and distributed them at his shows. The initial pressing of 1,000 copies sold out quickly, and helped fuel his dream of a chance at a career in music.

In 1991, just a month after his graduation from college, he journeyed to Nashville, the mecca of country music.
